Acupuncture
Acupuncture produces changes in nerves, muscles, connective tissue (fascia), hormones and circulation. By stimulating specific points, acupuncture releases the body’s own painkillers, decreases inflammation, enhances healing, and restores function.
In physiotherapy it is used to treat both acute and chronic pain and various musculoskeletal conditions.

Acupuncture produces changes in nerves, muscles, connective tissue (fascia), hormones and circulation. By stimulating specific points, acupuncture releases the body’s own painkillers: endorphin and serotonin.
Your body will start to release endorphins, foster natural healing abilities, reduce inflammation and promote physical and emotional well-being.
Can any physiotherapist perform acupuncture?
No. In B.C., Physiotherapists need special courses and credentials in order to practise acupuncture.
At South Vancouver Physiotherapy Clinic, acupuncture is only administered by practitioners that are members of Acupuncture Canada (https://www.acupuncturecanada.org/) and are certified to treat their patients using acupuncture.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Everyone experiences pain and discomfort differently; however, most people will feel little to no discomfort during their acupuncture treatment. In fact, some people report feeling intense relaxation or an increase in energy.
Is acupuncture safe?
An acupuncture treatment by a practising, licensed and trained acupuncture therapist is extremely safe. Your physiotherapist will practise the clean needling technique, which includes the use of new sterile needles, appropriate disposal, proper skin preparation and overall general hygiene.
Does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture can be used to treat people of all ages and is an effective treatment for pain. It stimulates the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain-relieving neurohormones. Acupuncture affects the functioning of the hormonal system, promotes a decrease in inflammation, increased circulation and relief from pain.
Will my insurance plan cover acupuncture?
Acupuncture performed by your therapist during a treatment session is considered physiotherapy treatment.
Contact your insurance company directly to find out details about your plans’ physiotherapy coverage. Acupuncture may also be covered if you sustained a workplace injury or were injured in a motor vehicle accident.
